For any bookings with goods classed as ''Hazardous'' (even those listed as 'Limited Quantities'), we MUST be notified in advance under the IMDG (International Maritime Dangerous Goods) Code.
All hazardous shipments will require a Dangerous Goods Note detailing the UN number, Class and Packing Group of the product.

What are Hazardous or Dangerous Goods (ADR)?
"Dangerous or Hazardous goods are solids, liquids or gases that can harm people, other living organisms, property or the environment. "
Dangerous goods are divided into nine classes with further subdivisons where necessary.
All dangerous goods are identified by a UN number and a Proper Shipping Name (PSN).
Customers
The IMDG Code requires all tank units to be properly marked. This includes HGV's and long tank units, to include:
- The proper shipping name of the contents to be marked on at least both side of the tank cargo/container units for example, Butane Gas or Alcohol Beverage.
- The proper shipping name for the goods must be displayed in characters no smaller than 65mm high. The text must also be of a contrasting colour against the background.
- Accurate placards (as shown above) should be used.
Spot checks are done at all ports to identify undeclared hazardous / dangerous goods.
Bookings
Bookings for vehicles carrying hazardous goods can be made online. Simply select 'Yes' on the booking details page and complete a Dangerous Goods Note (DGN). This then needs to be sent to our customer service team for approval.
We MUST be advised of Class 1 and Class 7 goods 72 hours before arriving at the port. Additional charges may apply to certain classifications of hazardous goods.
Please note - we cannot complete the DGN for you. However, you should be able to get the correct information from the supplier of your goods.
Eurotunnel Freight & Dangerous Goods
Some of the rules regarding the transport of dangerous goods on Eurotunnel Freight shuttles are different. Take a look at our Accepted & Prohibited Dangerous Goods with Eurotunnel Freight guide and the latest LeShuttle Freight dangerous goods guide.
Due to additional safety procedures, Eurotunnel Freight can only accept regular contract bookings carrying Radioactive materials. These are also subject to strict pre-authorisation criteria by Eurotunnel. One-off bookings carrying Radioactive materials cannot be made on Eurotunnel and must be made by a ferry operator subject to approval.
For Eurotunnel crossings please be aware that regulations for carrying hazardous goods can differ from those by road. All hazardous goods must be pre-declared to Eurotunnel by Freightlink and also declared by the driver at check-in, unless transported in Limited Quantities. Vehicles which turn up with undeclared hazardous goods may face unnecessary delays or be refused travel altogether.
Ferry Dangerous Goods Regulations
When carrying hazardous goods, please be aware that regulations for carrying hazardous goods by sea differ from those by road. This includes for goods classed as “limited quantities”. All hazardous goods must be pre-declared to Freightlink and the ferry operator and also declared at check-in. Vehicles which turn up with undeclared hazardous goods may face unnecessary delays or be refused shipment altogether.
All vehicles which are carrying hazardous materials must display the correct hazardous warning stickers. In some cases Freightlink are able to arrange for the supply of these stickers at a small additional cost (not included in rates shown online).
Hazardous Booking Confirmation
Please provide your Dangerous Goods Note at least 24 hours prior to travel. Bookings are not confirmed until a hazardous load has been approved by the ferry operator. Failure to send us a valid DGN may result in your vehicle being refused for shipment.
Drivers must have a physical copy of the DGN with them at all times.
