Since the 1st January 2024, many EU freight vessels are now subject to a new ‘carbon tax’ - the Emissions Trading System (ETS) for shipping. As a result, ferry tickets will cost more.
The introduction of the new EU ETS for Shipping is part of the EU’s wider efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across industries. Under the new system, ferry operators will need to reduce their CO2 emissions each year for vessels over 5000 gross tonnage.
We will be keeping you updated of any further operator updates regarding the ETS surcharge.
