Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) is a new payment industry regulation, which takes effect from the 14th September 2019. It requires card issuers to use multiple methods to verify customers' identities when taking payments. This is to enhance payment security and reduce online fraud.
From September, card issuers will need to use two different authentication methods to verify that a customer is who they say they are.
What is Strong Customer Authentication?
SCA allows the use of three different authentication methods
- something the customer knows (e.g. a password or answer to a security question)
- something the customer has (e.g. a token or push notification sent to their phone)
- something the customer is (e.g. a fingerprint or Face ID)
For a payment to be successful, a transaction must use two of the three different methods.
Our payment gateway uses 3D Secure 2 (also known as Verified by Visa or Mastercard SecureCode) to comply with the new regulation. During checkout, the payment gateway will prompt customers to provide the addtional authentication methods and the transaction will only be completed once they do that successfully.
