Following-up on our previous communication, in the beginning of 2024, companies operating vessels between ports in the EU/EEA will have to pay annual emissions allowances under the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS).
Vessels & routes
ETS will apply to commercial vessels (passenger & cargo) above 5000 gross tonnage (GT). It will cover 100% of emissions on routes between EU/EEA ports, and 50% of emissions on routes that begin or end at a port outside the EU/EEA.
What does ETS mean for you?
The costs of compliance with ETS are significant and will affect our operations, costs and contractual agreements. As with past regulatory actions, our customers will be subject to increased costs. From January 1st, 2024, a standalone surcharge will be introduced to customers to help ensure compliance with ETS.
